It's been a while since I've updated, so I wanted to give everybody the scoop on what's been going on. We've had a crazy home life for the past 2 weeks. We started smelling fumes the week before last after we had a ton of rain. We quickly realized that we must have a septic problem. John called the septic pumping guys and had them come out. The problem is, it took him 4 days (he did it himself to save money) to dig out our septic tank - It's HUGE!.
We live in a 45 year old house, and they did things a lot differently back then. Once he found the septic tank, we realized that it was right under the lovely flower garden and walking path that John made me last summer. He had a bunch of mulch and pebbles trucked in, and he made a a beautiful walkway path that we filled with 8 Mexican clay pots and an embarrassing overkill of flowers. After the fiasco was over, it took him 2 days to fill the hole back in, get more rocks, and remake the pathway. It's all good now, and looks like nothing ever happened, but it took the entire week to get the backyard back to normal.
Then, when I walked in the door from work on Thursday, John was holding his arm above his heart and said, "Don't freak out". Right away, I knew it was BAD and that I absolutely should freak out! A couple of years ago we went knife shopping and bought our first "serious" kitchen knives. They are German made and amazingly sharp. Because I am a little crazy and too fast with everything, the knives are off limits for me - John is so bossy :-). However, one of my biggest fears was that John was going to cut himself with them because they slice so easily. Well, my fear was realized on Thursday as John almost cut the entire tip of his left hand, middle finger off. He cut a 3/4" gap all the way to the bone. Needless to say, there was blood everywhere, and of course it had to happen 3 days before we were supposed to begin recording the CD. Now, it has been 6 days, and it is healing nicely. He's beginning to get feeling back in his finger, and is even playing the 2 songs that don't use that finger in any of the chord shapes. I haven't been singing this past week because I have been sick, and don't have much of a voice. Hopefully, I'll be back in full force next week and so will he. So, for the time being, we are finishing all 10 arrangements on the songs and John has been transferring our mini disk ideas to Pro Tools. He said that we have 25-35 really strong songs that he has archived and that they just need some lyric and arrangement work. I'm pleased that we won't have to stress the 2nd CD as much as the first one. That will be great, because writing for this CD felt overwhelming.
On Friday, we went to hear a good friend of ours, Rusty Knox, play at a local coffee shop. As crazy as it is, most musicians like to go hear other musicians play whenever they have some down time. We enjoyed getting to hear some of the songs off his
debut CD project entitled, "Reason Why". Rusty grew up in Davidson, NC, and you would be hard pressed to find someone in this town who didn't know him. He has been playing guitar for over half his life, but only recently made the trip to Tennessee to record his first album at Treehouse Studios (owned by my buddies, The Carter Brothers). I'm including a 5 minute audio interview that was recorded and posted on our town blog site. His CD can be purchased through CD Baby, and I hope you guys will take a listen and see what he's all about.
